Independence Grove will always be home to nature lovers and adventurers

Spanning over 1,000 acres and boasting an exceptional variety of activities ranging from fishing to even concert-going, the Independence Grove forest preserve is one of Libertyville's most well known and visited locations. Lake County Forest Preserve, the organization that owns and maintains Independence Grove, has been an overseer and protector of open spaces and natural areas since 1958. They look to not only set a standard in nature and recreation, but also in education and historic preservation. Recognized as a regional and national leader, Lake County Forest Preserve has never failed to give Independence Grove its signature look and welcoming atmosphere.

Boasting a large stone sign, the entrance of Independence Grove is impossible to miss as it branches off of Buckley Road (Route 137). One of the most prominent eye-catchers is the beautiful expanse of water that takes up a majority of the preserve. This 115 acre lake is the primary source of recreation. With it being home to countless different species of flora and fauna habiting both land and water, the lake provides a beautiful and bountiful home for fishermen and an eye-catching atmosphere for runners and hikers. The resulting swimming beach and rental boats that have been established based off of the lake are also a perfect stress reliever on a hot summer day. Independence Grove provides 6.25 miles of trail that circles the lake as well. These trails are a mix of gravel and paved roads that are constantly being traversed by daily runners, bikers, and hikers. With bridges to cross and hills to climb, all while the shimmering blue lake stares back at you, these trails provide the perfect landscape and scenery for everyday use.

Moving on to the Grove's signature man-made attractions, these are sure to satisfy any visitor's needs and wants. One of the most iconic areas for many parents and children is the sensory-rich environment that the Children's Grove provides. Describing this area as a playground would be downsizing to the extreme. This play area comes fully decked out with vibrant colors, handicap-adaptable equipment, tunnels, slides, and climbing walls. It serves as the perfect area to let children's imaginations run wild. Children aren't the only group that is catered to of course, with the Visitor Center offering panoramic views of the preserve. The center, open from 9am to 4:30pm, also provides history exhibits, banquet rooms, and even a seasonal cafe that sells snacks, light entrees, beverages, and desserts. Last but not least is the Millennial Plaza which provides an amphitheater, fountain, and garden that create the ideal backdrop for celebrations, programs, and the signature annual summer concert series. Many different bands will come to perform in these concerts to entertain the crowds full of lawn chairs and blankets creating a beautifully relaxed and entertaining vibe.

Independence Grove is the perfect place for locals to exercise, relax, and explore. There is always something new to try, and help is always available if needed through the well-mannered workers. The forest preserve never fails to satisfy with its beautiful sunsets that reflect off the lake, and its wide expanse of land filled with picnics and barbecues. At the end of the day, Independence Grove will always be home to nature lovers and adventurers alike.
